Holistic Education - The
Native American Model
Native America - As Americans
become increasingly aware of the
failures of traditional education
and traditional schools in meeting
the needs of a growing number of
young people, there has been an
explosion of alternative models in
education. One, which is only
recently gaining some attention, is
the traditional Native American
approach. Far from the rigid,
sit-in-a-row, memorize-by-rote
& don't think approach of
traditional schools, the traditional
Native American approach is
holistic and based on the
concepts of inquiry and intuition.
Today it would be called a
right-brain approach to
education.

So I learn.
Others share knowledge, I learn from them,
I learn on my own, with help as I wish it.
It does not take 12 years to make an intelligent
young man or woman.
It does take 12 years to dumb them down to
corporate wage slave mentality.
Natural intuitions are quashed, personalities
made into psychotic molds of
ego gone amuck, competition instilled as the
profit ticket creating ungodly behavior ... Mother Nature be damned,
we need that footall field full of pesticided grass, not an organic garden
where we can be in touch with Mother Earth's life processes, and so too
our own. The 'schools' and their 'administrators' don't tell you
this, but they know it to be true. But, their training and need for
money prevents them from acknowledging it in public forum, otherwise, they
think they would be out of a job, and yet ... that very job loss is what
will give them the courage to break free of the molds of corporate education.
America is changing the way we share knowledge
with the children and adults alike.
Learning centers are created to share knowledge
in creative ways, with learners learning of their own free will.
From this, genius blossoms, ego's fall away in shame as a sham, and heart
lights shine with Love, easily and in peace. Inspirational learning
becomes rampant.
Speaking of which ... can you name any Learning
Center which proposes to share knowledge in a way that inspires the peaceful
capabilities of the students learning?

Educators Looking At "Light Factor" In Learning
Abilities
USA - Educators have always understood that environment is a key factor
in
learning. In fact, those who originally pushed for windowless class rooms
thought that this would be a positive move in creating the proper learning
environment by cutting down on day dreaming. What they didn't understand
at
the time was the effect of florescent lighting on mood, behavior, health
and
learning ability.
"Malillumination" is the term coined by pioneer
light researcher, Dr. John
Ott, to describe sunlight deficiency and the negative, harmful effects
of
artificial pink or cool-white fluorescent lighting on behavior, learning,
health, hardiness and longevity.
Dear Friends of Learning,
This letter is to invite you and your homeschool
support group, learning
circle, book club, multi-issue learning
co-op, or other non-school
collaborative learning group, to Join in a
discussion and action programs
to DO SOMETHING to deschool society and create
a world of learning
communities.
OA Coalition for self-learning¹
is an ad hoc group of individuals and
organizations that has been coming together
on the Internet for three years
to discuss WHY we learn, HOW we learn, WHEN
we learn, and WHAT we learn.
We have tend to think outside the school/teach/educate
box, and to go beyond³
fixing the schools.² We have recognized
that the way we learn shapes, as
it is shaped by, the society in which we live.
With Paulo Friere, we are concerned that the
current school systems
remove young people from their families, communities,
society, and nature
to prepare them only for jobs in the corporate/factory/industrial
world. With
John Holt we have recognized that we are ³learning
all the time.² With
Ivan Illich we have explored ³Deschooling
Society.² With Peter Drucker and
Elise Boulding we have noted that the future
requires life-long learning.
With Margaret Mead we have seen that learning
in the home and community
can provide a superior education to a bureaucratic
school system.
Following these and other progressive thinkers
we have accepted the mantra
of ³envisioning a world without schools
-- creating a world of learning
communities.²
Whether we talk about self learning,
learning circles, unschooling,
deschooling, charter schools, vouchers, or
homeschooling, we all seem in
accord on these points:
€ Everyone has the right
to decide what s/he wants to learn and have the
opportnity to learn it, when they want, and
how they want.
€ Society and parents must
recognize this right and provide young
people with the opportunity to learn what
they want in the time and
mode they choose.
€ Forcing adult-designed,
teachers-designed or government-designed
programs on all young people is not an efficient
or democratic way to
prepare them to be productive members of a
democratic society.
€ Many young people and parents
are looking for ways to get out of the
public or academic school-boxes now imposed
on people by the
established institutions.
€ We need a radically different
learning system as the foundation
for the emerging radically different society.
€ All of us who agree on
these points want to join forces to move ahead.
As the Coalition discussed these concepts on
the Internet in 1999, one
member in Japan suggested that we write a
book. Another member in Denmark
offered to put individual chapters on his
web page. Thirty different
members offered to submit chapters for discussion
by the whole group. A
member in Vermont agreed to edit and publish
a final version. In August
2000 ³Creating Learning Communities
was published.² It attracted many new
members who initiated programs to go beyond
the book and to take actions
to help create learning communities.
During 2001 the vastly expanded Coalition developed
a ³Guidebook and
Directory of Consultants for Creating Learning
Communities.²
The Guidebook, released November 2001, defines
Olearning Communities¹ in
three modes: communities that learn, communities
that provide learning
opportunities, and communities of learners.
It lists over 75 individuals
and organizations that help groups of families
who want to establish
local learning centers, resources or services.
The Guidebook, like
³Creating Learning Communities,²
is being sold by many members of the
Coalition to finance further assistance to
community groups working to take
charge of their own life-long learning.
(The book for $21.95, the Guidebook for $4.00.)
During 2002 the coalition initiated the 'Learning
Cooperatives Quarterly'
that can be downloaded from its webpage.
During (2003) we are working on a project and
a booklet, ³Financing
Learning Communities.²
This project has two goals:
1) to help the press, foundations, and others
to understand the reasons for
the rapid growth of this movement, and it
importance to the future of
society, and
2) to help embryonic learning communities
find the financing to take their
different projects to new phases of development.
There are many other actions we may take on
in the future. The new Learning
Communities need a newsletter to network those
doing it. Vol.1No.1 has been
printed. We could develop a guidebook
for libraries to help them meet the
needs of autodidacts, self-learners, homelearners,
and others wanting to
develop their skills and knowledge on their
own. We might add ³New
Chapters² to the online version of our
book. We could establish a fund to help local
groups get started with their own non-school
learning programs. The
possibilities are as broad and interesting
as your imagination. You can
choose or create your own project to help
create learning communities.

Now this article represents the epitome of stupidity. Not only are
kids
being over-diagnosed for attention deficit hyperactive disorder but
now in
England they will not be allowed to attend school unless they are drugged.
The educational systems available to our children are ludicrous. How
about
making the materials more interesting or the presentation more stimulating
so that kids are not bored out of their minds? But no, our educators
can
only think of sedating the children so that their minds readily accept
the
boredom without objection. We enter this life genetically encoded with
certain interests, abilities, and purposes... Until we create an environment
that supports, enhances, and promotes these qualities we will continue
to
swallow the pills of ignorance.
