Fossett Reports In
ST.
LOUIS, MISSOURI, AUGUST 17, 2001, 10:00 A.M. CDT (15:00 UTC) -
Solo
Spirit pilot Steve Fossett reported by phone from the landing site
that
he is in good condition, except for minor bruises and scrapes. He
told Tim Cole, Solo Spirit project director, that the balloon dragged the
capsule in which Fossett was riding for approximately a mile after the
initial touchdown.
The
report from Fossett was the first word from the scene following a
report
at 8:10 a.m. CDT that Fossett's gondola was on the ground.
There
are people on the scene. The envelope is deflated. The balloon was
located
at 31 degrees 39' S and 54 degrees 16' W during the landing sequence while
Fossett was talking by phone to Project Director Tim Cole at Mission Control.
The
landing site is about 25 to 30 miles southwest of Bage, Brazil, close
to
the border of Uruguay.
Fossett
was forced this morning to end his fifth attempt to become the
first
person to circumnavigate the earth in a balloon after struggling through
rough
weather for most of the night.
He
was in the air for 12 days, 12 hours. It marked the longest solo balloon
trip
ever, in terms of distance traveled and time spent in the air. He has flown
more than 12,687 miles since taking on Aug. 4.
