"Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) went willingly wherever the microscope beckoned, even into the world of the "lower" animals and insects,
which Aristotle had not even credited with a full complement of organs. His classic study of the silkworm provided the first
detailed treatise on the anatomy of an invertebrate. The silkworm also helped him understand the processes of
respiration
by the intricate system of tracheae spead throughout the body. With his microscope he compared
the
cells
and the vesicular system of plants to the tracheal system of insects,
and so founded phytotomy,
the anatomy of plants"
Tracheal : the breathing tubes of flesh bringing air to lungs in creatures and plants.
In plants, these tubes moving the life giving energies are called xylem. xylem : zi' lem : a noun naming living fleshes : 1. The supporting and water-conducting tissue of vascular plants,
consisting primarily of tracheids and vessels; woody tissue.
